Some people have a relationship with mice as stars of children’s cartoons. But most people are actually afraid of mice or just view them as a pest. Especially home owners have the latter view, as mice can be a real problem if they are left to roam a house with out some kind of mouse control. This isn’t just because they can give you a scare when you see one; there are real reasons why mice should be exterminated from a house where people actually live.

For starters, mice leave droppings, and they obviously don’t clean up after themselves. If you have kids, the last thing you want to see is them playing in mouse filth. There is also the case of mice being carriers of diseases such as Bubonic and Typhoid. Since mice are drawn to house’s where food is lying around and easy accessible, it’s obvious why the spreading of disease can be of concern.

This leads to the question; how to get rid of mice? There are two main routes you can follow to get rid of mice, one being to hire a professional exterminator, and the other being getting rid of the mice yourself. The professionals will definitely do their job, but this comes at a price that can be unrealistic for many people’s wallet. Doing it yourself, on the other hand, can be an affordable way to handle the problem, as there are many options available at most hardware stores around the country.

The most common method of mouse control is to set up conventional traps. These are usually made with steel bars and have doors that close when the mouse enters after being drawn in by a tasty treat lying in the trap. These traps usually work just fine, but you have to remember that the mouse is actually trapped alive inside, and it’s up to you to get it out, either setting it free or killing it. The most humane is of course to set the mouse free, but if you do this remember that mice find their way back home if you don’t let them out far enough away from your house. Since mice have a perimeter or territory of over 200 yards, be sure to let them out further away than that.

On the less humane side you have the glue traps, which use glue to stick the mouse to the trap. The inhumane part is that the mouse will either starve to death, if you don’t attend to your traps often, or have to be killed if you actually find the mouse alive inside because there is no easy way of getting it loose from the glue.

Ants are found all over the world, from the hottest deserts to the lush green rainforests. We can find them in our backyards, in our homes, and even in our workplaces. Ants live in colonies and a single colony may have over a million ants. There are several different types of ants. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, driver ants, honeypot ants, weaver ants, leafcutter ants, fire ants, silver ants, and bulldog ants. All ant colonies are comprised of three types of ants, namely the worker ants, the soldier ants, and the single queen ant.

The behavior of ants may vary according to their type. The size of ants range from two to 25 millimeters and their color may vary from red to brown or black.
Army ants and driver ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants are found in South America and driver ants are found in Africa. Unlike other ants, these do not have permanent nests. These colonies reproduce by two methods – fission or nuptial flights.

Honeypot ants generally have enlarged abdomens. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. These ants are also considered a great delicacy.

Ants that make their nests in trees by attaching leaves together are known as weaver ants. These creatures first pull the leaves together with a bridge of workers and then they sew the leaves together by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.

Leafcutter ants live only within their colony and feed exclusively on fungus. These ants come in different sized castes to carry out various functions that are to be performed in the colony. Another unique type of ant is the fire ant. These ants have a sac of poison that is filled with piperidine alkaloids. The Australian bulldog ants are those with only one chromosome and these are amongst the biggest and most primitive varieties of ants.

Ants are of different types and are one of the most common creatures in the world. In spite of their small size, they may pose a threat to humans as well as animals.

Rats are rodents that belong to the Rattus genus of the family Muridae. These are the most dominant species on earth. There are several species of rats in the world. Most rodents are herbivorous, but some are omnivorous. In general, there are two basic types of rats. They are black or roof rats and Norway or brown rats. Both are thought to have originated in Asia and are now widely distributed throughout the world.

The brown rat, which is also known as the Norway rat, house rat, gray rat, barn rat, and wharf rat, is one of the best-known and is the larger of the two. Their scientific name is Rattus norvegicus. They are mostly grayish-brown, with a lighter colored stomach. A fully-grown brown rat is 18 to 26 cm long and weighs between 400 and 600 gm. They have a tail shorter than its body and their nose and muzzle are blunt. They prefer moist conditions and nest in deep burrows.

Roof rats (Rattus Rattus) are also called black rats and ship rats. They are usually black, slender, 16-21 cm long and weigh about 80-300 gram. Their tail is longer than the head and body and their nose and muzzle are pointed. As the name suggest, roof rats are climbers. Their paws enable them to climb and build nests in upper parts of dwellings, attics, rafters and crossbeams of buildings.

These rats breed when they are three to four months of age. They breed 1 to 13 times a year and produce 1 to 22 in a litter. Black rats and brown rats eat about the same things. Their diet typically includes seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits, cereals, meats and invertebrates. They consume about one-third of their weight in food every 24 hours.

They carry lethal diseases, damage structures and contaminate food. Some of the diseases potentially fatal to man that spread through rats are Weil’s disease, plague, salmonella food poisoning and toxoplasmosis.

Are you embarrassed that you have roaches? You don’t want anyone to know because they will think you’re an unclean person. If this fits you, you have come to the right place. It’s not your fault that roaches are in your home. They can come from a number of sources you have virtually no control over.

Grocery Stores

Roaches love to eat food. Product is shipped from all over the world to grocery stores. It only takes one supplier to infest a lot of other suppliers. The most popular way people bring roaches home is in a paper grocery bag. Why? Roaches like paper. They can also be found in other paper products at the grocery store like beer and soda cases.

Laundry

A lot of apartment dwellers go to Laundromats. And, apartments are known for having roach problems. When you go to the Laundromat, a roach might just tag along in your laundry. Maybe he/she is looking for a cleaner home to pursue. Be careful when going to the Laundromat.

Used Appliances

First of all, don’t buy a used appliance unless you really have to or you know it’s from a clean home. Roaches love appliances. They make their home in microwaves, ovens, fridges, and even washers and dryers. Don’t try to save a few dollars. Don’t ever take a used appliance from an apartment complex. You are just asking for some roach trouble.

Shipping Materials

Roaches love wood and paper and these are very common shipping materials. If a warehouse is infested you can be sure some of the critters will make it to your place of business. That’s why it’s important to always put out some boric acid bait paste. For one reason, if some roaches show up they won’t survive long enough to infest the premises.

Neighbors

If you are in dwellings attached to your neighbors homes, if one person brings them in they can easily spread without detection for some time. To keep them out of your home, keep water and food sources sealed. The roaches will tend to make their nest where there is the most water and food. If you want to get rid of all the roaches, you will need to treat your neighbors homes as well.

Outdoors

Hot humid areas have a larger concentration of roaches living outdoors. In some cases, they can come in from your yard. Some people use a boric acid bait mixed with fertilizer to eliminate the outdoor roaches.

Solution

Fortunately there is something that you can do about it fast. Call your local exterminator and their as good as dead.

Bed bugs are a huge problem for many people and generally are considered one of the hardest bug infestations to get rid of for good. How to get rid of bed bugs, is a question that many infested household owners ask themselves.

Once a bed bug infestation has been correctly identified they can be treated methodically. There is no one treatment; instead there are several processes that have to be followed one after another. For best results it is recommended that a professional pest control firm be consulted from the start. In earlier times bed bugs were treated by spraying DDT on all the infested furniture and rooms. However that is no longer allowed due to safety concerns with regard to DDT. Today the treatments tend to be more targeted.

In order to properly treat a bed bug infestation the property should be subjected to a thorough inspection. Even before that, various items cluttering the premises should be reduced, so that inspection can be carried out smoothly. It must however be remembered that cleaning the house in itself will not have any great effect on the bed bug infestation.

First step in this process of reducing clutter is to remove and launder with water at a temperature of above 120 degrees Fahrenheit the linen and garments that could have been or were infested. If garments and other items cannot be laundered due to some reason, a cloth dryer can be used to heat them till they are free of bugs. Another method that can be used is to wrap the garments using plastic and then to leave them in the sun for few days. Low temperatures, below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, can also be fatal to bed bugs. In order to remove the infestation through that method the items have to be kept at that temperature for over two weeks. Carpets and other such items can be steam cleaned. All these methods are used because they cannot be directly treated with insecticide. Items that cannot be subjected to any of the above methods should be discarded. Furniture should be taken apart as much as possible and cleaned, for instance by emptying and taking out the drawers in dressing tables and desks.

Another step in this process is to vacuum the house so that some bed bugs will be physically removed. While vacuuming the suction opening can be applied to infested surfaces, seams, and crevices scraped using a rough brush, so that some of the bugs and eggs get dislodged. The contents of the vacuum bag should be sealed and disposed of safely.

After that the house should be inspected and the areas of infestation should be noted. Insecticides can then be applied. Insecticides used against bed bugs come in variety of forms such as sprays, aerosols, or powders. Some of them can be used against other insects, such as roaches or ants. The user should check to ensure their effectiveness against bed bugs before applying. Instructions issued with insecticides should be adhered to faithfully to achieve best results.

If the bed bug species identified is one that mainly attack birds and bats, any bird nesting sites nearby should also be treated and precautions taken to prevent re-infestation through that site.

There are several species of wasps and some are able to grow up to 30mm in length. Wasps are a social insect circulating around a queen, which is much larger than the workers, starting a new nest each year. Nests are created by chewing wood and other plant debris mixed with saliva.

Nests are typically found in earth banks, in buildings (roof spaces or cavities in walls) and in trees or bushes. They build new nests every year and in the colder winter months the workers and males die. Only young queens survive the winter and they begin building new nests in the spring.

The young fertilized queen will emerge from hibernation around mid-April and searches for a new site for her nest. The queen will then rear the first brood of worker wasps by herself and
upon hatching these workers will carry on the building of the nest. The queen is the only wasp able to lay eggs and she will remain in the nest laying more eggs for further broods. By late summer the typical wasp nest consists of 3 to 5 thousand individuals. In cooler weather, the workers become more tired and aggressive towards anyone interfering with them.

Wasps do have a useful role scavenging for the larvae of other insects, controlling garden pests and clearing carcasses early in the season. They even dispose of rotten timber if available. However, they may carry disease picked up during their visits to dustbins, bottle banks and carcasses and can contaminate food if allowed to settle on it.

Wasps cause a nuisance for various reasons. It is usually the late summer when the workers do not have to feed the larvae with high protein food, and they can indulge in sweet substances – fruit, jams, syrups etc. They enter kitchens in search of sweet food, and while not particularly hostile, they will sting if aggravated.

As the cooler weather comes, the wasps become more irritable, and this is not helped by them feeding on over-ripe fruit, giving them the appearance of being ‘tipsy’. Again they are better left alone when in this condition.

A wasp sting is caused by the injection of poison into the victim, causing redness and swelling. In some case more serious effects occur and you should seek medical advice if this happens. Repeated stings can cause anaphylactic shock. Symptoms include respiratory distress, swelling of the face and vomiting with abdominal pain. Medical assistance should be sought immediately where anaphylactic shock is suspected. Wasps are most likely to sting when their life cycle is ending later in the year and so it is best to deal with nests as soon as you see them, rather than waiting until they increase in size. Old nests are not reused and do not need to be dealt with or removed.

Earlier in the year the only nuisance caused by wasps is minor damage done to wooden fences, for example, and wooden fabric of buildings when the wood is needed to build nests.

Although wasps are troublesome to us it would be unwise to destroy nests without good reason. Wasps are controllers of far more injurious pests of forestry, agriculture and gardens. If the presence of a nest is causing no direct problems, then it is best left well alone. Wasps’ nests are abandoned at the end of the autumn.

You can dispose of individual wasps using domestic insecticides, although this will not control or eliminate the colony itself.
